Monet painted ten Weeping Willow paintings around 1918-19, apparently in mournful response to the mass tragedy of World War I. On 12 November 1918, the day after the end the war, Monet offered one of the Weeping Willow paintings as a gift to the French nation to mark the Allied victory.
